Hattie Peck: The Journey Home is the second book in this series. We loved the first book and without surprise have enjoyed the second just as much. In this lovely offering by author Emma Levey, we see that Hattie faces the challenge of letting go as her diverse and wonderful flock are now ready to leave the nest so to speak.
Filled with energetic and colorful illustrations children and adults alike will no doubt fall in love with these lively interesting characters. Hattie’s flock if you’ve never read the first book is full of wonderful owls, storks, a platypus and even reptiles. If it’s hatched out of an egg, it’s likely to have been included. This is a great educational moment to learn about egg arriving creatures.
The story is certainly an adventure from start to finish. At first, it seems somewhat sad that everyone is going their own way but it ends on a good note. Lots of lessons can be taken from this book about hard decisions and letting go. Being introduced to so many different characters is a wonderful way to teach children about how everyone’s family looks a little different. The ending is absolutely wonderful but I won’t give it away. 
My children ages 8 and 6 enjoyed this book. They loved the story and the imagery. I’m a huge fan of chickens ( we have 6) so I love Hattie even more! I can’t hesitate to recommend this book enough..maybe it’ll help me out when my own kids have to leave my nest! The book is perfect for children ages three and up.
